Signal K

Open Source Marine Data Interchange Format

http://signalk.org\n\nIt's json based, so that is easy! @neftaly told me about this.
And one the developers is in New Zealand already ;)

I just discovered Signal K myself not too long ago. Related: have you seen any decent "marine" display units that could possibly connect with a Signal K server or even a NMEA network? I feel like a good looking, customizable/hackable, weather proof display with buttons would be the killer piece of hardware that could really make these emerging Open Source data formats take off.

@Dominic

@freelancer it displays as a web page, so you could just get a waterproof smartphone/tablet. Or a cheaper phone inside a waterproof bag (a capacitive touch screen will still work)

@Freelancer

True, I just don't think a smartphone or tablet would be good to mount in a bulkhead or outside. Plus, these devices aren't typically designed to be hard wired. For example, automatically turn on/off when the supply power is switched, have waterproof connectors etc. Touch screens can be a hassle on a boat too.

I just stumbled upon this: Stowe GX Terminal here http://l-36.com/GXTerminal.php

Looks interesting, maybe there are more out there.
