Re: %2UHfNP9Xp

I personally think that SSB has great potential for people who are looking to carry out journalistic work for the public good. Maybe, SSB is never going to be right for a #whistleblower scenario where you want to keep your identity secret from everyone and share vast amounts of information at the same time but that is quite a atypical situation best handled by other software.

It is much more common where someone share information for the public good within their social network in order for that info to propagate and be spread in a robust and censorship resistant way. For example, a journalist (professional or citizen) doesn't tend to publish anonymously themselves but can facilitate anonymous sources. I think SSB is very adapt at this.

@dan hassan For running Tor, you can either use the Tor Browser which open a SOCKS5 proxy on localhost:9150 or the Tor system package which listens on localhost:9050.

The problem is, we shouldn't be mixing our SSB traffic in with the traffic that we we want to have a high level of anonymity. Then anyone (or something doing automated deep packet inspection) watching the Tor exit node could relatively easily make a connection between the two types of traffic.

The best way to use SSB via Tor at the moment is to send it via a Tor session that is only being used for SSB. So for example, if you connect via the Tor Browser port 9150 then it would be a good idea once you have stopped SSB to click the onion icon and select "New Identity" before you do any other browsing.

However, there is a use case that is also addressed in the Orbot app for Android. If Scuttlebutt is blocked on the ISP or nation state level then you can easily route all your SSB traffic through Tor to circumvent the censorship. If the censor then blocks Tor then you can use bridges to connect to the Tor network. Along with the LAN, sneakernet and potentially Bluetooth capabilities of Scuttlebutt, this is a pretty censorship resistant application.

@arj the onion service sbot thing is really cool! I would love to test that out with someone.
