I think it's an eternal september problem more than anything, though it's funny how NPM always seems to end up being involved with every incident.

Re: %KXHeBAnfJ

It's gonna be really hard to contribute to semi-abandoned packages from here on out.

Funnily enough XhmikosR (the first complainant in the GH thread) has write access to some of my repos on exactly the same arrangement.

Re: %IGmMTfCSu

Suggest something like https://aws.amazon.com/deeplens/

@neftaly

We have a straightforward cash money job someone might want to do, hmu #jobs #new-zealand

We provide a web-based application for construction QA.

Currently a user of the app can upload a photo and assign that to a particular checklist item (e.g. user can take a photo with their phone and upload via the app).

We have a potential customer who want to mount cameras on site that will let them take photos from the installed cameras and upload to our app.

This means we probably need the following:

• to be able to associate a camera with a project (we would need to provide API endpoints for this)
• to be able to trigger an action that would take a photo on a particular mounted camera and associate this with a checklist item (we'd need a way to invoke the action on the camera and get access to the photo, or be notified that it's available, e.g. in an AWS S3 bucket that our app would be able to access)
• some way of detecting if the camera is "online" (if the camera if offline we'd want to be able to let users know there's a problem so they wouldn't assume asking the camera to take a photo would work)
• we use AWS Cognito for authentication, so we'd probably want JWT tokens to be used to authenticate the cameras

If you're feeling arduino-ey i am gonna leave a Simrad TP32 with fried electronics at hackland (but good motor and hall effect sensor), slap a LSM303 and a motor driver on that bad boy and you will be sorted.

A few days after the diesel-water incident, my engine siezed. Despite my efforts to run diesel back through the engine, enough water remained to sit inside a cylinder and rust the piston in place.

It was completely stuck - I even broke the starter handle trying to turn it over.
ngn004.jpg

The first thing to do was to remove the injectors, and pump CRC (WD-40) into the cylinders. Unfortunately, the rods holding down the injectors were rusted in place. My mates Chris & Clint came over to help, but we stripped the threads trying to remove them.
ngn100.jpg

Following their advice, I welded nuts to the top of the rods, and flushed them with penetrating oil. A few days later we managed to get them out and get access to the cylinder.
ngn006.jpg
ngn005.jpg
ngn101.jpg

I poured a bunch of CRC in every few days for the next week or two.
ngn009.jpg

While this was going on, I also cleaned out the raw water system (zinc oxide had been building up and blocking it, causing overheating), and replaced the anodes.

After a couple of weeks of this, it was time to try and get it unstuck. We had trouble getting enough leverage to move it, and tried several different tacks (poles attached to wrenches, crowbars, dyneema on pulleys, etc), but I eventually found a huge old antique pipe wrench (Trimo, 70-100 years old) in Dads shed which did the trick.
ngn008.jpg

After some cleaning up we managed to get it turning over normally, and could even get it to burn ether. I also made a groove on the part where the starter handle connected with an angle grider, so that it could be used with a wrench. It still didn't run, however.
ngn007.jpg

It turned out the inejectors and high pressure fuel pump were also blocked. Water is heavier than diesel, so it sat in the high pressure pump at the bottom of the fuel system - after the fuel filter. Diesel bug (bacterial biofilm) built up while I was working away on getting the cylinders unsiezed, and when I turned the engine over again it made its way though the rest of the fuel system, blocking the regulator valves on the HP pump and the nozzles in the injectors.

I took the injectors apart and cleaned them thoroughly, but cracked a banjo bolt connecting the fuel line. I replacements on the lathe from M8x20 bolts.
ngn001.jpg
ngn010.jpg

The high pressure pump was the last thing to be done. I had originally misdiagnosed the problem as being purely the fault of the injectors, but turning the engine with the fuel line squirting into the air exposed the issue. I got the water out by blasting alcohol and compressed air through the pump, and cleaned out the chunks of biofilm by disassembling the valves.
ngn000.jpg

Success! I still need to do an oil change, as there's lots of kerosene and CRC in the lubrication system at the moment, and after a long run will do another change + replace the filter, as a lot of loose debris will probably be dislodged by the CRC.

@neftaly
Voted what an amazing story, great work, congratulations on your great adventure!

On October 19 2017 we hit $1M in ARR.

Did we celebrate? Does the pope shit in the woods? We dressed to the 9's, got the fuck on the ferry and partied every which way. The team had genuinely been amazing to get the business to that point, and we all deserved a full day of letting our hair down.

Dan's (teary-eyed) speech:

'The boys and I wanted to say a few words to you wonderful people. They say the first million is the hardest, and my god have we seen some mahi.

If we were a rugby team, the sales guys would be the wingers. We get the privilege of dotting down to score the try, and quite like actual rugby players dance around doing a post try chanui-celebration, but we would be nothing without the team.

It takes so much work from everyone just to get to a sale, and it takes so much more to keep everyone coming back month, after month, after month.

The changes we have seen in the product over the past few months have been phenomenal. What you guys did to get Fulton Hogan on board was amazing. I’m very happy to say that their quality manager froths all over it, and we’re heading to a meeting with them next Monday to look at doing 3 more jobs.

The value you’ve added over the last few months has been amazing, from the (and I better get the terms right) exports and charts, to a matrix that loads fast enough to bring tears to Luke Mexted’s eyes.

A million dollars is amazing, and we’re so proud of the business, and the milestone we’ve hit, but what we’re all most proud of is the team.

The most reoccurring advice we have been given over the years has been all about bringing good people together. And that is something we can unashamedly say we’ve done veeeery well at.

It is absolute pleasure to watch us all grow both at work, and outside of it: be it buying a home, or fathering little woods, it is a delight for us to be a part of all your worlds.

We are in awe of all of you, and the work you guys put it. It is our greatest pleasure to be working with you guys to solve so many problems for so many people. And we want to sincerely thank you all for being such wonderful, wonderful people.

Maybe one day we’ll get to revenues that rival Jesse’s – ambitions. But for now, it’s about celebrating our wins. So cheers!'

By the end of 2017 it felt like we'd run our second marathon. All the highs and difficulties of an undertaking that requires consistent, constant, effort and attention.

We'd always planned to burn through the investment we'd gotten in the previous round, partly because there was an option in the investment contract we had with Punakaiki, but we also knew that with more people in the team, there was more we could directly impact. We had it in us to stretch as far out in front of us as possible; so we did.

Cash got pretty tight towards the end of 2017. We had expected a tax credit that was a struggle to get approved (it did, we just got audited so it took a while), and we had probably gotten caught up in the heat of it all.

There were other challenges. We moved into too small an office, which we'd outgrown within 6 months. Melbourne is a significantly bugger market, and none of us founders are from there, and no-one knew a thing about us.

We went into the 2017 Christmas period with a sense of pride and joy, but no small amount of uncertainty about the financial future of the business.

2018!

A year of change and a year of (greater) stability. We worked with our board on a plan and it turned out to be a good one. They provided us a competitive investment deal that we had a short amount of time to shop around and see if we could get a better deal. After going to San Fran and one pitch to a different investor, we knew the 'better deal' was a red herring and the devils we knew were just angels with experience.

So we raised $1.1M from new existing shareholders, which proved to us that we had the backing of those who had known the business intimately.

So many amazing additions to the team, in roles that have proved so important to the business.

12.jpg

So what's next?

The feeling of potential in this group is palpable. The joy it's brought to myself, Daniel, Peter, and I hope and believe, to those who have been here, to all of our families, friends, and interested parties has made the whole thing joyously worthwhile.

Now, we are all here to find out what chapters we can write together for all the times, rewarding and challenging, ahead.

We're so glad you've chosen to be part of this, and thrilled to be doing it with you all.

[part 4]

2017

We were able to start 2017 with a new sense of purpose. We had money. For the first time really, there was money in the bank account. We didn't have to only buy expired Kloud beer from ISIS liquor anymore - though by then we'd acquired the taste for it so we continued to - and we could hire! Grow the team! Pay ourselves [just over minium wage]! What a joy.

So we did, we grew!

  • Feb 2017 - Erwin
  • March 2017 - Anna, Mandy
  • April 2017 - Blake

We'd hit double figures in the team! We weren't all men!

The flurry of joy and change was an upward spiral of self-fulfilling excitement. We grew and got happier and got happier and grew.

The corrogated iron walls of our dear Conqa office could hold us no longer, and so we moved!

We thanked its extreme cold and extreme heat in extreme style. I believe Jesse set up every screen we had to play asynchronous strobe lights. My jeans split at the bum, and somehow we broke two lights.

8.png

Were we grown up? It was hard to tell (it wasn't; we weren't). But we were in a much more grown up office. It had a lift! Gone were the years of walking up the 4 flights of stairs.

The team, the customer base and the revenue continued to grow. We also started to travel to Australia more to investigate the market and to make start selling the product. We definitely weren't there to party a lot, and we certainly wouldn't do meetings hungover.

9.jpg

I don't know if it was cause we'd just run into Awen Guttenbeil (Luke's first customer) and subsequently watched the video of him making the biggest NRL hit of ALL TIME, but we we knew we could draw a line in the sand, and make something special happen. MDD (Million Dollar Day) was borne. 21 October 2017.

In start up speak, $1M ARR is 'impossible.' Statistically speaking, to hit $1,000,000 in recurring revenue happens to almost no start up businesses.

We were doing $30K MRR, or $360,000 in ARR, so the goal was audaciously to nearly triple the business in 4 months.

On one of our trips to Aus, we'd had a very promising meeting with Fulton Hogan, in which their statewide Quality Manager was interested in what we were doing. That helped our confidence too, and then, driving along the freeway after meeting them for about the fourth time, on a beautiful autumnal Melbourne day, Ajith called to confirm they would pilot. We'd taken to calling Fulton Hogan our GC - Game Changer. They were the company that would take us into the Aus market. We cracked the champagne that night and planned our expansion.

Of course, in the cold light of day, we had to service them. And they required servicing. There was Fulton Hogan, MDD, and in case that wasn't enough of a task to bite off, we also opened a Melbourne office and investigated the UK market too in the winter of 2017.

The Australian market grew for us solidly, and proved that the product was capable of servicing projects twice the size of what we were on in NZ.

Re: %JZxoKLBTO

[part 3]

2016

However, that day did come. 2016 arrived and after weeks of basking in the fact that we existed properly, we now had to reconcile ourselves with the fact that we had customers. That was something we hadn't experienced before... It was the thing of dreams, and the thing of nightmares.

In June 2016, Jesse Wood - according to the Guinness Book of Records, the largest Wood known to man - joined the Conqa team all the way from the fair shores of Tauranga.

Throughout 2016 we had made the decision to forgo any building tools to enable Jesse and Nef to build customer facing product. For 3 non-technical people, that meant raw-dawg JSON coding for all projects, fruitless hours on JSON validators (if you don't know, please never find out), and one mistake constituting hours of clean up. Many a Sunday at the pub or the office (customers had to be offline for the clean ups).

We had also made the decision to use Firebase - a tool with numerous benefits but one quite significant flaw. It turns out you can delete everything that's every taken place in the software with a quick shift + delete. Which, one afternoon, I did. I've never been so scared in all my life. Daniel thought I'd only deleted all users (again, a possibility back then), but no - I'd deleted all customer data that'd ever been recorded in Conqa. By some stroke of luck, Google gave it all back to us bar 30minutes, so somehow, again, we survived.

All the while, we were burning money quickly and we never really had much at all. Murray have cleverly (for both himself and us) only invested $20K at a time based upon milestones, and his last $20K arrived in late 2016 as we were desperately talking to every investor in town (which in Auckland is like, 2).

Dan was burning himself out selling to everyone; Peter, Nef & Jesse were rebuilding checklists 2.0 and I was trying to raise money with zero experience in anything. November/December 2016 I'm still not 100% sure how we held it together. The 2016 Xmas party would suggest we didn't.

Amongst all of that, Luke joined. His first day in the office wasn't jumping into the deep end so much as skipping the frying pan and jumping straight into the fire.

The end of 2016 felt like the end of our first marathon. We had made it. We'd run as fast as we could for 365 days.

We raised $600,000 dollars on the 24th December - more money than we'd ever seen in our lives. All confirmed with desperate phone calls on Christmas eve to miffed shareholders and new investors. But it happened.

Re: %JZxoKLBTO

[part 2]

Luckily, what we did have was guardian angels; acquaintances who had become friends, and friends who had become mentors.

Tony Niklin was one. Tony was a gregarious, inspiring and life affirming man who made us feel like it was all possible. Tony gave us some the best advice we ever received: 'Be good people, & find good people'.

He also introduced us to another good person, one with similar qualities, in a different format.

That was Murray Holdaway. Murray had founded Vista Entertainment, which had recently listed on the NZX, which meant that Murray was not only one of the most successful B2B Tech Entrepreneurs in the country, but that he suddenly had quite a bit of spare change in his pocket.

We were lucky enough to attract enough of his interest and after a fair few coffees, we were incredibly fortunate to have Murray invest in the business pre-revenue.

It was an honour, a privilege and shit-scary.

Finally, after 6 months of building the product, it was ready for the market.

It was the slowest and quickest 6 months ever. We yelled, drank and lived under minimum wage through it.

Finally, in November 2015, we sent out our first invoice. Through the process of understanding the market, we had built up a leadlist, and so once the product was ready, we were able to convert in the market instantly.

By December 2015, we had 4 customers.

5.png

Then we celebrated!

As most of us know, Nef loves boats.

There were many options for a Xmas party in 2015, but really, there was only ever one.

We head out to the renowned waters of the Hauraki to celebrate a weird and wonderful year.

It felt like the end of the road in so many ways. We had been so focused on getting a product out there.

Having a business. We would find out that none of knew what that actually meant, but we were happy for that to hit us in the face another day.

Peter almost got knocked out with a sharp tack and a faulty boom, and Nef nearly drank a whole beer.

@neftaly

I've been working on a construction QA startup called #conqa for the last few years. It started with an immutable centralized distributed parent pointer tree using Firebase for messaging/storage (everyone has replicas, and entries are signed, but final consistency is guaranteed by us, not a blockchain/DHT), however we've mostly moved to CouchDB to help scale. Now that the company has become established, my plan for the next few years is to gradually become unemployed and live off-grid on passive income!

One of the directors wrote an informal history for the team (we're at about 30 people now), reposted below. There are few other people with startups & exits on SSB - please share your story too sometime!

The ride so far (Barney Chunn)

Like the beginning to most stories, we didn't really know that the beginning was the beginning.

In late 2014, Peter messaged Dan & I to discuss an idea. An idea he'd be working on, an idea that we'd happened upon as well.

So we met up. Before we did, I'd said to Dan 'this has been going nowhere for 4 years now, let's give him everything we have and try keep 5% or so.' To me, that was a small passive income while we went wherever our lives would go.

So on Jan 30th 2015 we met on a sunny afternoon at De Fontein in Mission Bay. Someone suggested beers and so we had beers and once we'd had beers, we decided instead of handing over everything to Pete, we'd work together. And that was where it started.

To take a step back, in 2012 I had finished university and having studied Philosophy and English, I was unemployed. Moving back from Wellington to Auckland, I went to a friend's birthday dinner. At the dinner, a school friend ours made a somewhat auspicious entrance, as at 22 he was behind the wheel of a brand new Ferrari.

I don't give a shit about cars but it did have a certain appeal to the me that was on the dole and living with my girlfriend (guiltily) rent free.

The day after, Dan and I had breakfast and I said to Dan 'Man, we need to get into software,' He said 'Awww yeah'. So we did.

The idea itself was triggered more from the era than the industry; it was a time in which truly new, valuable and globally impactful businesses could be started, and we knew that was something we could be a part of. We just needed to solve a problem, so we went looking for one.

We dove into market research to discover which market had was globally significant, had inefficiencies, and genuine pain points that could be solved by software. Daniel and Peter both being engineers, the construction industry was high up on our list to investigate.

After interviewing hundreds of people from directors to cadets, the quality assurance process in the construction industry presented itself as ripe for a software solution.

unnamed.png

So circling back to early 2015, our back of the envelope business plan was to build the product in a month, grow to profitability by, say May/June that year, and then Dan could get back to travelling, & Pete and I could live however we wanted.

By March 2015 we put out the notice for a developer.

As it turned out, some one replied. Not just someone, but a fullstack Node developer with a couple of start ups under his belt.

We met Nef in a pub (I'd love to remember what he ordered; he normally drinks no or low alcohol beers now), and he impressed us immensely having already created almost exactly what we'd hoped to build (turns out he hadn't but we thought he had).

1.png

So after a few formalities, our little business grew by 25% and we started work on developing.

After spending a few months in cafes and the engineering library using Pete & Dan's old student IDs, my Aunty mentioned she had some space in a little room in Britomart.

We loved it when we found it; a shitty shed on top of a beautiful brick building, up 4 flights of steep stairs with no elevator. It was intensely hot in summer and freezing in winter. You could crawl out the window and hang out on the roof; you could dangle your feet off the edge of the building 4 stories up and watch Takutai Square below.

We had nothing but debt but for some reason, we took it.

2.png
3.jpg
4.png

If there was one thread that has helped weave the Conqa tapestry, it has been optimistic naivety. We had scoped a one month build time for the MVP, with an aggressive growth forecast thereafter.

After 3 months however, what we had wasn't quite an MVP. That, and we had no money.

On track to be in Auckland at 5pm.

All going well. Some of the fuel is dirty but we are changing filters and polishing as best we can. No issues yet.

Trying to organise a long power cable for the vessel in Wynyard quarter so we don’t have to run generators. Excited to be home soon.

Hi all,

Rounded East Cape.

Position:
37d 25 S 178d 19e
Course: 300d true
Speed over ground: 8.2 kts

All well.

Pulled anchor at 3am but it was snagged on two large steel cables. Using grapples, rope and the powerful anchor winch we were able to pull it off the anchor and free the ship in 25 minutes. Not bad for 3 people who’d just woken up an hour before.

We had to say bye to one of our crew for whom the delay was too much. He flew out from Gisbourne, hitching rides on local speedboats as we have no tender and the port was too lazy to accept us in on a Friday afternoon.

After two nights at anchor we finally could leave. The weather was fairly large. I wish could have got photos of the water we were pushing as we fell off 6m waves.

We’ve been making slow progress due to currents and headwinds also. At some points I’m seeing only 7kts sustained speed.

Also, fuel burn has been horrendously different to what was told to me during selling process. Despite barely any load on the generator, we are burning 1800L a day roughly. We are going to have to see what is going on there as we don’t have the budget for fuel burn that high this year.

We are now on point to land in Auckland 3-6pm tomorrow if we don’t get any problems.

Thanks for your emails and wishes for safe passage.

Cheers,

Hi all.

Interesting day. Here’s the update.

Position: 39d 39m south, 177d 42m East. Hawke’s Bay
Course: 29d true
Speed 8.5knots

We have had a meeting and have decided it’s not safe to take the vessel through the 40kts on the beam from East Cape to Cape Colville.

If we had left on time we’ve had made the window but Wednesday late put us against it.

We will be dropping anchor in the bay as there is no wharf space. It looks like we will be only arriving in Auckland Tuesday, which means we’ve had to delay all our volunteers arriving further and delay the welcome. However it means if we have issues we won’t be rolling in 40kts, 4.5m seas and falling around the engine room.

More updates.

Suspected kelp on the prop last night. Threw big vibrations through the boat and we reduced rpm to minimum safe operating cruise. (Engine doesn’t like rpm between 260-290, displayed clearly on the side of the engine).
What ever it was has gone.

Other news, while checking fluids, an engineer dropped a floorboard onto the gearbox and knocked off a valve. We lost 40L of gearbox oil before the main was shut down and the valve replaced. Oil was replaced and we were back up and running before 20 Mins had passed. I wasn’t even woken up! So much for perfectly clean and empty bilges. But excellent job from Chris and Ondrej for fixing it so fast.

Anyway. Everything else is going ok. Sunny and easy going.

Thanks for all your emails, I appreciate getting them.

Re: %B0bpo6tjM

Hi all,

Lat: 42d 16.14S 174d 48.66E. South East of Blenheim.
Course: 45d true. Speed: 9kts.
Weather is fine. Bit of swell and some breeze.

We departed Lyttelton last night at 9pm after dropping and marking 60m of chain to test the anchor winch. All went ok, except usual anchor handling stuff for boats this size. Winch is great.

We set off and had to navigate out at night. Wouldn’t be hard except we were also testing engines under load and lots of concentration required. Nice job to engineering team.

We’ve had an interesting 12 hours. We’ve run the engines hard for 12 hours and have now pulled back to cruise. Ship is doing well. She is a ship. Such fun to drive but also lots of pressure and systems.

Engineering has had constant logging on the hour or less and we’ve dealt with issues as they arose. Such as. Dirt in fuel (had to change a filter with main stopped) and overheating gearbox.

The crew have done well with little sleep. With the engine running hard it has been very noisy in the accomodation areas. You’ve got to be tired to sleep :).
I’m glad to have Ondrej, Chris and Ben here. All adding so much.

I’m looking forward to sleeping. Had a nap 12-4am and have been on since. Waiting to send this email and then I’ll go sleep!

Cheers,

Craig

Is there some way to break up user keys more granually, so that you can issue subkeys to other things to act on your behalf? E.g. having a separate read key and write key, or a write key with instructions for clients to ignore posts to all but one channel, etc, alongside a channel dedicated to key revocations. That way you could share an "API key" with a third party system.

Re: %B/udGEbEx

We've been trying it out it as a replacement for Firebase and DynamoDB. It's great! The (JS) API is well thought out and it's easy to do server stuff with it. I miss some of the shinies from Datomic but administration is much easier.

We have a cluster of master DB servers running on compose.io. Our AWS EBS application servers spin up both a node app and their own copy of Rethink running in proxy mode. We can spin up any number of application servers, while keeping the load on the masters super low, for great HA (our setup is read-heavy with low writes).

Going forward, any new client-server project I work on will probably be Rethink-based.

I think the owner has had higher offers from overseas, but doesn't really need the money (land bank), and would prefer to sell locally.

I told Nigel about #tangleball and #hAKLand - he may visit the next time he is on the mainland! Fiona is also pretty interested in SSB (I showed them #spider-farm and #boats).

@neftaly

I visited Pakatoa island for a few days on the long weekend! The caretakers, Nigel and Fi, have a microwave link to Waiheke island, but are otherwise completely alone.

It used to be a resort in the '80s, and everything was basically abandoned as-is. The cabins still have tables set and beds made. In the background are a bunch of Wekas; free of introduced pests, they've basically taken over the island.
IMG_20171022_180218.jpg

Their house is basically 2 cabins on the beachfront, with the dividing wall knocked out. Across the road is a pub and restaurant. There was a lot of original food and booze left sitting around (the tuckshop is still set up with a till and a bunch of stock, and the bar is fully stocked with circa-80s beer/wine/spirits).
IMG_20171022_191251.jpg

We went diving for scallops in the morning. You just see the mast of his (24ft iirc) sailboat on the left; Nigel is planning to do a solo trans-tasman crossing next year.
IMG_20171022_191145.jpg

There used to be a power cable to the island connected to a substation, but it keeps getting picked up by anchors and dredges. Nowadays there is wind, solar, a big new generator, and an older generator.

Re: %+fBXl12aV

This is a WIP for work, so it's not perfect, but here's an example of a nice big parent-pointer tree (as well as an index and a collection of orphaned sub-trees). You could very easily implement multiple parents in a big efficient cyclic graph for free, thanks to persistent data structures.

const entries = [
  {
    id: 'hash of { meta, data } prop',
    meta: {
      parent: 'parentId'
    },
    data: {
      ...
    }
    ...
  },
  ...
];

const tree = R.reduce(
  hydrate,
  immutable.fromJS({
    root: undefined,
    index: {},
    orphans: {}
  }),
  entries
);
import { fromJS, Map, List } from 'immutable';
import * as R from 'ramda';

const getPath = (entryId, parentId, parentPath) => {
  if (parentId === null) return List([ 'root' ]);
  return parentPath
    ? parentPath.concat([ 'tree', entryId ])
    : List([ 'orphans', parentId, entryId ]);
};

const getChildIds = tree => tree.toList(
  undefined
).flatMap(
  child => getChildIds(
    child.get('tree', Map())
  ).push(
    child.get('id')
  )
);

const updateIndexes = R.curry(
  (orphan, parentPath, index) => getChildIds(
    orphan
  ).reduce(
    (index, id) => index.update(
      id,
      path => parentPath.push(
        'tree'
      ).concat(
        path.splice(0, 2)
      )
    ),
    index
  )
);

const hydrate = (state, entry) => {
  const {
    id,
    meta: {
      parent
    }
  } = entry;
  const path = getPath(id, parent, state.getIn([ 'index', parent ]));
  const orphan = state.getIn([ 'orphans', id ], Map());
  return state.withMutations(
    state => state.update(
      'index',
      Map(),
      updateIndexes(orphan, path)
    ).setIn(
      [ 'index', id ], path // Add index
    ).setIn(
      // Add entry
      path, fromJS(entry)
    ).update(
      // Move children
      state => state.setIn(
        path.push('tree'),
        orphan
      ).deleteIn(
        [ 'orphans', id ]
      )
    )

My ❤❤bae Sam is completing a PhD in social psychology, regarding the effects of social media on people. She just published a paper challenging the conception that millennials are generally more narcissistic than prior generations.

Hmm, I bet you could just put a prop on the end of a bowden cable and tow it behind a boat, without having to worry about waterproofing the dynamo. Point the axle down and let the cable flex to stop it rising above the surface.

@neftaly

I thought these Harryproa outriggers were quite interesting. They're made out of glass on plywood and look like something Dom might eventually make.

C60-019.jpg
The wheel pivots, and can be used both inside and outside.
The sheet winch doubles as an anchor capstan - there is no need for a separate windlass.

Harryproa_Cruiser_50_rig-e1445287273668.jpg
The twin unstayed masts can be easily handled by one person by hand in the rough. Unthinkable on a traditional cat this size!

An earlier single-masted design (looks like 5-10 have been built).

I met the Sailing La Vagabonde couple at their berth on Westhaven. They weren't there during the day, so I came back after dark on my old dinghy, and had had one of the most excruciatingly awkward conversations of my life. Then my engine wouldn't start so I had to paddle away with my hands (didn't have oars, rowlocks were broken). My mate Craig also met them in Tonga after they'd had a fight (they weren't talking to each other at the time).

kbox-web

I'm having a shot at building a web UI for kbox, a Signal-K/NMEA-2000/NMEA-0183/WiFi enabled Arduino.

111.png
One thing I want is to be able to connect arbitrary devices to the input pins, and convert calibrated analog voltages to discreet NMEA 2000 messages (as N2K has a well-defined set of reverse-engineered message types). The idea is that you can enter several values then automatically generate a reference curve. I want an expansion board to interface with anything from water tank level sensors to engine controls.

112.png
I made a little 3D CSS thing for orientating the IMU/accellerometer.

Signal K is actually really nice. It's just a JSON object representing the state of several vessels. It's much higher level than NMEA2000/CANBUS/DeviceNet, and doesn't define things like physical connector standards or sensors types, so sK and N2K both work together. I've started working on a little module for implementing it on web apps.

Cloning Navionics charts

I was trying to get charts working on a very basic plotter (Lowrance Elite 4 HDI), but was unhappy with the crappy low-quality raster chart I purchased online. I found a German site with free working autogenerated charts based on OSM data, however these were not suitable for navigation.

There is a torrent file floating around containing a collection of worldwide C-MAP CM93v2 (S63) charts, compatible with OpenCPN. Unfortunately, C-MAP updated the encryption/DRM around 2012, with a new format called CM93v3. Not the end of the world, as LINZ provides free raster charts for all of NZ. They also provide free vector charts as individual layers, but no-one has publicly compiled them into a usable chart file. Unfortunately, I had no luck getting any of these working on the plotter.

Eventually, I managed to procure a 2gb Navionics SD from a friend. These worked in my plotter, but were not recognized when copied to a microSD. A little research revealed that SD cards come with several hardcoded values, including a CID (unique serial number).

s-l1000.jpg
Samsung EVO plus cards happen to share the same hardware as their eMMC chips (embeddable flash memory for phones etc). As a result, they implement a feature in violation of the SD spec, which allows the CID to be written more than once.

Beating the DRM on a Navionics card happened to be as easy as copying the files and cloning the CID. The only caveat is that you must use a SD reader that reports the true CID; USB-based readers return their own CID, and not that of the card. I installed busybox on my android phone and cloned the following repo. It took a couple of tries to actually write the correct value, but the card now works on every navionics-supporting plotter I've tried.

This would undoubtedly work on every other type of SD-card-based DRM. In theory it'd be possible to push firmware updates to every chartplotter in existence blacklisting certain CSDs (serial numbers similar to CIDs, but instead reporting the brand/capacity of a card). However, spoofing CSDs is as easy as spoofing CIDs.

If you post from one identity from multiple devices on the same threads, do they need to be synced for sequences to work correctly?

@neftaly
Re: %dzKt4CvrH

Shouldn't the sigils only be a user-interface hint? So if you type %whatever, the UI takes that as a hint to show an autocorrect, but it actually encodes it as a special symbol/token of sort (such as a URI). That'd make sigils/links way more extensible for 3rd party things too I guess.

@neftaly
Re: %dzKt4CvrH

Regarding the hash extension, couldn't you then make a post with a broken hash algo key, that intentionally collides with the key of a legit message originally made with a non-broken key algo, and overwrites the index reference? Though I guess some kind of fix would be to ignore new messages containing any sort of blacklisted hashe (even just mentioning one in a comment body etc) after deprecation.

Also, I am concerned about having hash types in IDs, as there is a potential implication that (ignoring the fact that only SHA256 & ED25519 is currently supported) a SHA-3 ID for a bit of content is just an alias for a SHA-256 ID. Is this a thing?

I sent Dom the following last week, but he refused to answer unless I posted to SSB!

I've been having a play around with SSB, and was curious why messages and blobs have a distinct identifier? Couldn't you just infer what they are by context?
Also, why don't you use a protocol prefix for SSB identifiers? For example (based off https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6920):
ssb://sha-256;UuDYPy7ae9ese2I7opJxiWVPQcgtZEF4amYqb9qQLiw?type=message
cause then you could do clickable links etc

I would also like to know more about how sequence works -

  • Does each new post in a message chain add 1 to the last-seen sequence number?
  • What about messages that arrive late (and have a low seq number)?
  • What about messages that falsely claim to be from the future (sequence + 100)?
  • How is it different to simply inferring the sequence number from the previous prop?

Have you looked into how holding plates work? They use a container of antifreeze around the elements to retain temp and "buffer" it. You actually want to stop stuff freezing if possible, as there is a temperature spike when a liquid transitions to a solid (energy gets dumped out).

I think you could get everything you wanted with a fridge using holding plates, and some beefed-up insulation - "crystal kitty litter" is available very cheaply (at least in NZ) and is nothing more than re-branded Aerogel. A bit of that and some polyurethane foam to seal it, and you're set.

@neftaly
Re: %UlrYlvkFx

@Piet Unfortunately, there's a lot of FUD regarding LiFePO4, understandably brought about by the reputation of LiPO. In actuality, they're even safer than lead-acid. Worst-case failure conditions LiFePO4 mean venting toxic smoke (they don't heat up enough to catch fire). Worst-case for lead acid is exploding (H2 + O) and spraying H2SO4 around.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQs7L5LmEss

Regarding balancing in parallel, the voltage differential is low by their nature, and their charging limit is 3C-5C (600a-1000a). You'd need some impractically thick wires (and a battery so flat as to be already ruined) to get anywhere near that! It's too time-consuming to be practical for regular balancing, and more intended as a way to recover from fuck-ups.

I prefer a BMS because I'm lazy, but they're absolutely not a necessity, and there are plenty of people running fine without them :)

Re: %blQ650n5I

I'm going to have to call it off, something has come up Saturday :( Will try and get out on the water on Sun, if anyone wants to hang out then. Will also see if I can drive up for a bit - really want to join in!

Do many attending have modern chartplotters? I could do a short talk/workshop on beating the DRM for charts (Navionics etc).

Re: %AmpRntTom

Were you in Mawhitipana? I saw a liveaboard Raven with a fiberglass tender yesterday, I yelled your name a few times but no response, and couldn't get through to your phone. I was in a raft-up with a mate (Highwayman, possibly still there, and another guy in a launch who is a big LiFePO4 nut). If not, head over to the next bay, I think you'll find your separated-at-birth twin!
