we do use such identity naming in meatspace quite often, the imposition of a uniform treatment is something that comes from oppressive, BUMMER social networks. I love it that we're not forced to conform to that here.
consider this: is it weird when a child refers as "mum" to this woman who's not your mother? is it weird or confusing to you that a couple addresses each other as e.g. "honey"?
sure, it can occasionally lead to some uncertainty and confusion, such as when an acquaintance referred to me with a nickname that only my wife ever used to refer to me, but that was no big deal, it just made for a slightly funny anecdote
In face space, some people call me by my given name, others by my surname, and some even call me keks (or queks -.-). How they refer to me is part of their expression, and I wouldn't want to change the words in their mouths.
IMHO, this identity naming is confusing. In this post, I see a reference to “mary”, but Patchbay shows the name “mnin” under her posts. I believe that links to users should not contain names, but the program should pick and show a name according to my preferences.
